Iration, Pepper and the Rise of American Reggae Rock
The 2024 pairing of Iration and Pepper has now passed, but it was a fitting summary of a scene that has quietly built one of the most loyal live audiences in the United States. Both bands come out of a tradition sometimes called American reggae rock or West Coast reggae: music that borrows the offbeat skank, deep bass lines and easy tempos of Jamaican reggae, then mixes them with surf rock, punk energy, pop hooks and the occasional touch of hip-hop.
Pepper formed in Hawaii in the 1990s and became known for a loose, rowdy, power-trio sound that owed as much to punk clubs as to roots reggae. Iration, which also has roots in Hawaii before settling in California, leans towards a smoother, more melodic style, with polished production and choruses built for summer radio. Put on the same bill, the two show the range of the genre, from sweaty and raucous to warm and sing-along.
Why the genre thrives on the road
Reggae rock has often grown outside the mainstream charts. Its bands tend to tour heavily, playing outdoor amphitheatres, beach towns and festival circuits where the music suits open air and long evenings. Fans follow groups from show to show, and co-headlining packages like this one let promoters offer a full night of complementary acts. Independent labels and artist-run releases have also played a big part, giving musicians control over their catalogues and touring plans.
Listening beyond the headliners
If this tour introduced you to the sound, it is worth tracing the lineage backwards. Classic roots reggae explains the rhythmic foundations, while 1990s acts such as Sublime show how Californian bands first fused it with punk and ska. More recent groups in the same circuit continue to blur the lines between reggae, pop and alternative rock.
